Setting Up Your Own Email Server

Our colocation, VPS, and dedicated server customers may wish to configure their server to send and receive mail.  Many free popular mail software packages and addons (spam filtering, virus scanning, etc.) are available for download from the internet.  We recommend you research your choice of software and determine what features you want in your mail server before installing.

Once your server is up, you may opt to make use of Zordio's spam-filtering email server for incoming mail.  When making this request in a support ticket at our website, provide Zordio with the domain for which it should accept mail, as well as the hostname or IP where the mail will be sent.  You must also set your MX record for the domain in question to mailrelay.zordio.com.  Note that in order to use the Zordio mail server, you must either configure your mail server to reject (not bounce) mail to invalid recipients, or provide a list of valid recipients to FreedomBI, in order to reduce spam.

To use the mail server for outgoing mail, simply set mailrelay.zordio.com as the relay host in your mail server.

If you are not using Zordio's mail server for incoming or outgoing mail, port 25 in Zordio's firewall needs to be opened for your mail server's IP.  To request the exception, open a support ticket at our website and include the port, IP, and reason for the exception.

Important: You must run a secure mail server.  If you are seen to be sending spam, including through an open proxy or by accepting and bouncing emails to invalid users, access to your mail server may be closed.  We take spam seriously.
